From garden tools to toys

When a group of Minnesota teachers realize their attempt to make and sell garden tools is failing, they decide to use their extra materials to make toys. Lynn Everett Baker (1898-1964), Avery F. Crounse and Alvin F. Tesch started the Tonka toy business in Mound, Minn., back in 1947. Fifty years later, they have sold 30 million of the miniature toy trucks, including that signature yellow dump truck.

Bet they don’t make ’em like this anymore. Tonka commercial circa 1980.
