How far we have come since the recount of 1962-63

With the Mark Dayton and Tom Emmer governor recount now on Day Four, it might a good time to view a gubernatorial recount from the past. This election garnered national attention with a visit from JFK, who enjoyed his Minnesota beans.

Similar to the current recount situation, returns showed a close race between Democrat Karl Rolvaag and Republican Elmer L. Anderson. The recount process then took 139 days to resolve and resulted in Rolvaag winning by a mere 91 votes.

Narration by Minnesota Historial Society acquisitions librarian Patrick Coleman and video from the KSTP-TV archive. Read more about this recount from MinnPost.
