Inside Story: The promise of Somali elections

Three experts, including U of M professor Abdi Ismail Samatar, discuss the meaning of Monday’s presidential election and Somalia’s future prospects.

On Monday the Somali parliament chose Hassan Sheik Mohamud as the country’s president. Mohamud, chosen from a group of 22 candidates, will take over from President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, of the departing transitional government. In this special on Al Jazeera’s Inside Story, host Hazem Sika interviews three experts — including University of Minnesota professor Abdi Ismail Samatar— on the situation in Somalia and the promise of the election. Samatar’s brother, Macalester professor Ahmed Ismail Samatar, was one of the candidates for president.
