Name Rep. Michele Bachmann’s re-education camps

Note: This contest has ended. The winner is listed below.

Following the passage last week of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which expands AmeriCorps, Rep. Michele Bachmann shared her concerns with the listeners of KTLK about the bill. “I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service,” Bachmann stated, “And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically-correct forums.”

Our charge to the followers of MinnPost on Twitter is, come up with a name and slogan (in 140 characters or less) for one of these “re-education camps” that has given Rep. Bachmann pause. Make sure your answers include “#mp140” so we can track the responses. This contest ends Friday at 5 p.m. Join Twitter and join in the fun.

Young people being pressed into mandatory service and trained in a certain philosophy…

When my dad was young, that was called “growing up on a farm.”

Minnesota deserves better than an elected official that spreads mis-information and misconstrues what our president says. This is a serious situation. I have a difficult time treating it lightly with a “Name these Re-education Camps Contest.”

How about the “Michele Bachmann Needs Re-Education Camp”? But this idea will die here ’cause I don’t Tweet. Nevertheless: can’t resist!

I agree with Sandy Tracy. Too many people actually believe Michele Bachmann. I hope there is a newspaper that will seriously look at all her statements and shed light on how damaging they really are to the issues involved. One elderly woman we know listens to rhetoric like hers and believes it. She has told us she lies awake at night afraid of what is happening to our country. It is time we put an end to the rhetoric that does nothing but fill people with fear.

    hello all
three cheers for michele bachmann for showing the american public some of the plans president obama has in store. did you know president obama wants to start a MANDITORY GOVERNMENT SERVICE program. this would be three months of goverment service for all 18 to 25 year old americans. according to rahm emanuel would be used to educate draftees in a “UNIVERSAL SENSE OF SERVICE.”
    president obama also wants a
what would be the purpose of this socalled security force with the same strenght as our military. it seems to me, if my memory serves me, another country in the past had a very strong national security force, AND THEY WORE BROWN SHIRTS.
a previous post mentioned a old woman being afraid of whats happening in our country. i too am afraid if you think i am imagining these things watch the following video

Sadly, it would appear that the conservative movement has become the party of fear.

Their use of the word “socialism” reminds me of the 50’s and the McCarthy “red menace” campaign.

Are we seeing a modern day version of “McCarthyism”?

Today the term is used more generally to describe demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents.

    Notice the irony?

Mr. Swift, as a math teacher, what I wouldn’t give for time in my death-march-crammed-chasing-every-NCLB-test-point math curriculum for some indoctrination. Who’s got the time for a Peace Pole unless it’s a way to practice the constructed response portion of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments? Wait, I could totally practice the ratio of the volume of a cylinder to its surface area…

    Thanks for the tip Thomas!

    hello Richard Schulze
here is the definition of socialism

Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating public or state ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equality for all individuals, with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation.

do you thing this definition can be applied to what is happeing in washington.

    I DO

I find it deplorable that this site, which I initially considered a reasonable source, would initiate a contest of such dubious nature, let alone post the homophobic responses.
The deluded paranoiac Bachmann’s skewed notion of reality (her traditional ultraconservative worldview) leaves her totally incapable of conceptual ideation. Her fears, racial and religious, cement her thought and stunt her reasoning, like so many on the ‘right’.
The results of this insipidly purposeless farce of a competition further demonstrate the low level intellect of this community — an abomination at best — pure ignorance.
Whoever thought this ‘meme search’ was of any merit is an idiot, just like all the respondents.

david granneman: No, David. No one is practicing or working toward socialism as it is classically defined.

What we have in Washington is socialism for huge corporations like those in the financial services industry that gave us the current meltdown. The government socializes the COST by making us taxpayers cover it but leaves the profits for the so-called “risk takers” who run the banks.

  20. Submitted by Richard Schulze on 04/13/2009 - 03:39 pm.

    Socialism comes in many forms.

None of which I am aware of are practiced as you describe.

Privatize the profits and socialize the risk. We have been seeing that for generations.

    Corporate welfare, farm subsidies etc..

Perhaps your point is more that “socialism” is in the eye of the beholder. Or even better, “I can’t describe it but I know it when I see it”

  21. Submitted by Julie Blaha on 04/13/2009 - 05:05 pm.

William: I appreciate your concern about Bachmann’s terrible statements. Now, calling all the respondents idiots is a weird follow-up to a statement denouncing prejudice (you know, painting us all with a broad brush without really knowing any of us after decrying painting entire groups with a broad brush…)

Sometimes the only response to a truly crazy statement is to call it out with humor. The responses are intended for the most part to be from Michele’s perspective. Heightening a bad idea to the point of absurdity is an effective way to highlight hypocrisy or idiocy.

And for those of us who live in the sixth, if we don’t laugh at this once in awhile, we’ll go crazy too. Constant indignation is not only ineffective, it will grind you up. I hope you can take a break from your (justified) anger from time to time so you can live to fight another day.

    hello all
the DEMOCRATES say they are the party for the common man. it is becoming clear the DEMOCRATES are not for the common man but are for BIG CORPORTATIONS, BIG WALL STREET BANKS, BIG LABOR UNITONS AND BIG GOVERNMENT.
PRESIDENT OBAMA has spent trillions of dollars to reward HIS politcal contributors – they have given no money into the hands of the common man.

I apologize if you happened to be one of the respondents. It’s nearly impossible to identify the sarcastic from the inane or the insane.
I found none humorous, absurd yes, but never ‘funny’.
Maybe you’re able to clearly disseminate the sick from the silly, however I had great difficulty, as many others must have also.
The ‘clincher’ for me was the winning ‘slur’ by MHMorgan
“We are here, we are queer and soon you will be too.”
How would you defend that Julia?
A broad brush, yes, but you chose the color.
There is nothing indignant about my position and there is definitely something wrong with crude baseless humor.
Does this ‘gay’ wit speak for you?
    Is everyone laughing?
    How ‘queer’.
