Bill gives state workers leave to donate blood

State employees could take three hours of paid leave to give blood under a bill working its way through the Legislature. They’re already allowed to take time to give blood at state work places, but the change would allow them to leave work and donate blood at another facility.

Two weeks notice to the boss would be required for scheduling purposes, so that no overtime pay would be needed to cover the work missed during donations.

“The Red Cross asked for this,” said House sponsor Rep. Gene Pelowski, DFL-Winona.”There is deep need for more blood and this is one more means to get people to donate. This will help save lives.”
