Ellison backs Madia for DFL endorsement in Third Congressional District

On the eve of the Third Congressional District endorsing convention, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison has endorsed the candidacy of lawyer and Iraq vet Ashwin Madia.
Madia and state Sen. Terri Bonoff will compete Saturday at Wayzata Central Middle School for the DFL endorsement. Both have pledged to abide by the endorsement. Most watchers of the race believe Madia goes into the convention with enough delegates to lead on the first ballot, but not the 60 percent needed for endorsement.
The race to replace retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad is viewed as a toss-up. State Rep. Erik Paulsen will be the Republican nominee.

In a statement released this morning, Ellison, who represents the adjoining fifth district, wrote:

“Ashwin Madia’s story is so dynamic, I am convinced he will captivate the voters of the 3rd District by stressing his service to his country as a U.S. Marine in Iraq — who knows how to effectively get us out of Iraq, as an attorney arguing successfully for civil and human rights, a strong advocate for fairness and prosperity for hard-working middle class families, and a strong and clear voice for common-sense progressivism.”
