GOP convention host committee seeking helpers

Want to help the Republicans nominate John McCain in St. Paul? The local host committee for the 2008 Republican National Convention is looking for a few good volunteers to make it happen as smoothly as possible.

Actually, organizers need 10,000 people — to meet folks at the airport, answer questions, help visitors get around and handle many other tasks before, during and after the Sept. 1-4 event at the Xcel Energy Center.

Many of the related events are happening throughout the Twin Cities, so there will be opportunities all around the area. And you don’t need to be a Republican to volunteer to help the Twin Cities put out a civic welcome mat for visitors, organizers stress.

To register, go to the website at After entering the site, click on the volunteer button and fill out the questionnaire.  It takes about 20 minutes, and not everyone who applies will be accepted, organizers warn.

All applicants must be 18 or older and be willing to undergo a security background check as well as attend orientation and training sessions conducted by convention organizers.
