Vets for Peace holding its national convention here, too

Another national convention is heading to the Twin Cities this summer.

The 2008 Veterans for Peace National Convention will be held Aug. 27-31 in Bloomington, right before the Republican National Convention comes to St. Paul Sept. 1-4.

Last year, the vets’ convention drew 450 members to St. Louis; they expect a similar number this year. They’ll be based at the Ramada Mall of America.

Being in the same vicinity as the Republican convention was a big factor in choosing Minneapolis, officials said. They’re even urging members to stay in town an extra few days to protest at the RNC.

Among the featured speakers are former State Sen. Becky Lourey, whose son was killed in Iraq, and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minneapolis.

The theme of the convention is “Peace and Justice for All.”

A half-day seminar on Agent Orange victims is schedule for Aug. 27.
