A web-based petition has been launched to draft the suddenly famous Ohioan Joe the Plumber to run for Congress. At the moment, I don’t take it seriously as a political movement (the organizers are shooting for 2010, so who knows), but I do love its slogan: “Plunge the crap out of Washington.”

  1. I find it curious that every time we discover some colorful or unusual, but otherwise ordinary, character who is basking in his/her 15 minutes of fame, somebody decides that character shall become the answer to our flawed political system by encouraging a run for office. That somehow, this particular person is the kind of “everyman” we need in Washington. Perhaps we’re just so desperate for change we’ll be willing to nominate our Chauncey Gardiner. It’s funny and sad at the same time.

  2. And of course the ‘everyman’ often turns out to be a plant by a political operator.

  3. I don’t see how a guy who illegally practices plumbing without a license, doesn’t pay his taxes and doesn’t pay for his own medical care could be such a hero to the GOP. They seemed to get awfully upset over Franken’s tax mistakes.

I guess Joe the Deadbeat just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
