St. Paul Parks Director Bob Bierscheid, who is retiring at the end of the year, has received the Outstanding Professional Award from the National Recreation and Parks Association.
Bierscheid got the award Friday at the group’s annual event in Baltimore. He’s been St. Paul’s director for seven years; before that, he spent 22 years in Roseville.
Despite budget cuts, Bierscheid has been credited with keeping city parks in good shape. The park system includes the Como Park Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, Midway Stadium, dozens of recreational centers, three golf courses, several swimming pools and 4,200 acres of parkland.
No word on who will replace him next year; city officials joke that they’re still trying to talk him out of retiring.
