Latest word from London: America’s ‘a little bit cool again’

Here’s a follow-up dispatch from London with an election perspective from my cousin Mark Fitzpatrick, a senior fellow for nonproliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies there:

“It’s a great time to be an American abroad. The headline on the free tabloid distributed at train stations this morning said ‘The day America became a little bit cool again.’  I’d like to think the original version was shorter before some cantankerous editor added ‘a little bit.’ The story noted how one US journalist in Vienna said a young woman walked up and kissed him on a bus after she overheard his accent.’ From my own (disappointing) experience on the public transportation in this town, I can report that the British are less demonstrative. But yesterday I saw a group of train station employees giving fist-bumps and chanting ‘OBAMA’.  Everyone I spoke to yesterday was happy about the election outcome. Expectations are high.”
