Pawlenty seeks aid for Wilkin County farmers

Heavy rains and an early frost made it impossible for farmers to harvest 23,500 acres of sugar beets in Wilkin County in the Red River Valley, so Gov. Tim Pawlenty has asked federal officials to declare an agricultural disaster.

If the request is granted by the secretary of agriculture, farmers in the county would be eligible for federal aid.

Pawlenty estimated the loss to the community was $22 million.
