With the new year comes a new tax in Mankato.

The Mankato Free Press says a new half-cent hospitality tax takes effect today, with the proceeds going to help pay for operations at the city-owned Alltel Center, which hosts meetings, athletic events and concerts.

It’s expected to raise about $400,000 a year.

Business owners had opposed the new tax on restaurants and ticketed events in the city, but officials decided it was better than raising property taxes.
