Former riverfront eyesore opens as St. Paul event center

The old dilapidated grain elevator on the Mississippi River bank, just west of downtown St. Paul, was long an eyesore and a roadblock in the city’s efforts to clean up the riverfront and make it accessible to visitors.

But its historic nature — it was the nation’s first cooperative grain elevator — kept it off the demolition list, and now the city has renovated it as an event venue.

The space, now known as City House, will hold up to 275 people, and rental costs start at $136 for three hours.

There’s a kickoff event hosted by the St. Paul Riverfront Corp. from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, with registration available on Facebook.
