GOP candidates for governor to speak in Sauk Rapids

At least eight of the Republican candidates for governor in 2010 are scheduled to appear Thursday at a forum in Sauk Rapids.

According to the St. Cloud Times, voters will be able to talk directly to the candidates, one on one.

The event is not your typical moderated political forum, said Carol Rupar, chairwoman of the Benton County Republican Party. Candidates will have two minutes to introduce themselves before they sit down at tables where people can stand in line to talk to them.

The Olmsted County DFL ran a similar event in Rochester this month that was referred to as something like “speed dating.”

“Someone came up with the idea and we thought it sounded good,” Rupar said.

The 7 p.m. event is at the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.

Confirmed candidates are: former State Auditor Pat Anderson of Eagan, environmentalist Leslie Davis of Minneapolis, state Rep. Tom Emmer of Delano, former state Rep. Bill Haas of Champlin, state Sen. David Hann of Eden Prairie, activist Phil Herwig of Milaca, state Rep. Paul Kohls of Victoria and state Rep. Marty Seifert of Marshall.

Officials hadn’t heard whether state Sen. Michael Jungbauer of Eden Prairie is coming.
