New St. Cloud bridge dedicated today, opens Thursday

A new bridge in St. Cloud over the Mississippi River was dedicated today with much fanfare and will open to vehicle traffic Thursday.

Along with the usual pool of politicians — U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, state Reps. Steve Gottwalt and Larry Haws, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Mayor Dave Kleis and state Sen. Tarryl Clark — two people who helped name the bridge were involved in today’s ceremonial first walk-over, said the St. Cloud Times.

Pauline Hoover and Frank Danzl got to attend because they’re credited with coming up with “Granite City Crossing” for the bridge’s name. It replaces the old De Soto Bridge, which had been found to have structural problems.

Isn’t it amusing that Michelle Bachmann shows up to cut the ribbon – having done nothing to help find funds to re-build that bridge. It was the state senators and congress-people (Tarryl Clark in particular) who found STATE funds to get the job done. The city would have gone for seven years without a bridge, harming business and residents. Unbelievable!!
