All flags at the Minnesota state Capitol and at all state buildings are at half-staff today in honor of Pearl Harbor Day.

Japanese planes attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, leading to the country’s entry into World War II.

More than 2,400 Americans were killed in the raid and naval reservists from Minnesota — aboard the USS Ward — were in the harbor and are credited with firing the first U.S. shots of the war when they dropped depth charges on a Japanese sub and sunk it during the attack.
