Time change update: Local service for Deborah Howell to be at 11 a.m. Jan. 23

Update: The St. Paul mayor's office reports that the time for the local service in St. Paul for Deborah Howell has been changed to 11 a.m., not 11:30 as earlier reported. Mayor Chris Coleman is Howell's stepson.

A local memorial for Deborah Howell, the newspaper editor killed in an accident in New Zealand last week, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Jan. 23 at Central Presbyterian Church, 500 Cedar St., in downtown St. Paul.

Howell was editor at the Pioneer Press in the 1980s, and the paper won two Pulitzer Prizes on her watch. She had worked previously at the Minneapolis Star. In the 1990s, she went to work in Washington, D.C., working for the Newhouse chain and then the Washington Post.

Another memorial for her will be held Jan. 15 in Washington at the National Cathedral. In a letter to family and friends, her family announced a scholarship fund in her name at the University of Texas to help women majoring in journalism.
