A press conference called by Rep. Tom Emmer — one of the leading Republican candidates for governor — had many wondering if he’d be announcing his selection of a lieutenant governor runningmate. Rep. Marty Seifert, another GOP frontrunner, had announced last week that Anoka County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah will be his lieutenant governor candidate.

But Emmer announced at 2 p.m. that there’s no runningmate yet, but that he’s named a search committee to help him choose his lieutenant governor candidate.

The committee will be chaired by the current lieutenant governor, Carol Molnau. Molnau will be joined by Rep. Matt Dean, R-Dellwood; Rep. Laura Brod, R-New Prague, and businessman Bryan Reichal, CEO of PureChoice, a manufacturing company located in Burnsville.

Emmer said there’s no immediate deadline for the committee, and that he’s focusing on wooing delegates to the Republican state convention April 30.

Later in the afternoon, Seifert had his own daily announcement: GOP state Sen. David Hann, a former governor candidate himself, on the Seifert bandwagon.

  1. I think Rep. Emmer should hold press conferences when he has news to announce, not to announce that he may have news at some future time.

  2. Since Laura Brod is on his Search Committee, does that mean she’s off the short list?
