U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, from the 1st District in southeastern Minnesota, will be awarded the Silver Helmet award from the AMVETS organization on Tuesday.

National and state leaders of the organization will bestow the award, which they say honors “significant contributions in the fields of Americanism, congressional service, civil service, peace, defense and rehabilitation.”

Walz is a retired command sergeant major in the Army National Guard and the highest-ranking enlisted soldier to ever serve in Congress, according to the Albert Lea Tribune.

The 10 a.m. ceremony will be hosted by the Albert Lea AMVETS Post 47, at the Albert Lea American Legion Leo Carey Post 56.

AMVETS is the third largest veterans organization in America. Members have served at least one day of active duty and have an honorable discharge.
