Independence Party candidates for governor get air time

While most of the early odds-making and star-gazing in this gubernatorial endorsement season involves evaluation of the DFL and Republican candidates, the Independence Party could play a role in the November outcome. Spoiler or surprise winner? Non factor? Who knows?

Two of the party’s candidates — Rob Hahn and Tom Horner — faced off Friday on “Almanac.” They were the top two finishers in the Independence Party straw poll. You can find the video clip on the “Almanac” page.

Hahn wants an added tax on fast-food restaurants, a “fat tax.”And he wants a statewide hospital system. Horner’s looking for ways to beef up research at the University of Minnesota.

The IP party will meet May 8 to make an endorsement, although Hahn intends to run in the primary anyway.
