The Minnesota Legislature is finishing the paperwork to allow deductions on 2009 tax returns for donations made earlier this year to the Haiti earthquake relief effort.

The feds already did it, so when it’s enacted, state tax returns will conform with the federal returns on the deduction.

With the popular “donate by texting” to help Haiti program advertised on television so much, many people will be affected by this. It involves contributions made to qualifying charities between Jan. 12 and Feb. 28, whether by text message, check, credit card or debit car, says the House Public Information Services.

It’s expected to cost the state about $10,000.
