Dan McElroy, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, says there’s still work to do but reports that the state has weathered the economic downturn better than others because of the state’s diverse collection of industry sectors.

He said this Tuesday in Austin — the home of Hormel — and, of course, mentioned that the state’s economic success rcomes, in part, because of Minnesota’s large food industry.

The Austin Daily Herald said McElroy noted that Austin is a unique example of a small community that’s home to a Fortune 500 food industry corporation — Hormel — which “helped the community stay on its feet and contribute to Minnesota’s success through the recession.”

In the “More work to be done” department, McElroy listed four priorities: the demographics of the workforce, technology, globalization and the importance of sustainable forms of energy.
