This is just a test: Emergency drill today at Prairie Island nuclear plant

There’s a full-scale emergency preparedness drill under way today in the area around the Prairie Island nuclear power plant, on the Mississippi River north of Red Wing.

The Red Wing Republican Eagle says the exercise involves the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, Xcel Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Homeland Security, Dakota and Goodhue counties, and Pierce County in Wisconsin.

The goal is to test “the capabilities of all responsible agencies in the event of a nuclear emergency at the plant, according to Minnesota’s Department of Homeland Security.”

Each nuclear plant conducts an exercise every other year. Officials will report the results of the exercise Friday in Red Wing.

With everything that’s been happening in Japan recently, and all over the world, emergency preparedness should be the top priority of everyone here in North America. You never know when something is going to happen.
