DFLer Meffert wants more debates with U.S. Rep. Paulsen

DFLer Jim Meffert, running for Congress in the 3rd District, wants four more public debates with U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen, but the incumbent says the three scheduled meetings — two that will be broadcast — are enough.

Meffert campaign manager Alex Falconer sent out a statement today saying he’d asked the Paulsen campaign for four debates around the district, “so that voters can attend, look the candidates in the eye, and get their questions answered.”

“Commers pushed back, referring to the two closed-door engagements we have on the calendar, and he indicated that Paulsen would not be committing to any public debates,” Falconer said.

Commers said later that there are three scheduled meetings between the candidates — a KSTP/League of Women Voters debate, an appearance together on public radio and a meeting with the Edina Chamber of Commerce.

“If we were trying to hide, why would be do a televised and a radio debate? More people will hear and see Erik and Jim in those broadcasts than we could pack into four high school auditoriums around the district,” Commers said.

Not surprising that Paulsen doesn’t want a lot of debates. He ran as a moderate in a moderate district but his votes tell a different story.
