Auditor Rebecca Otto gets Minnesota fire chiefs’ award

State Auditor Rebecca Otto received a Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association during the group’s annual conference in Rochester.

It was good timing for Otto, who is seeking re-election Nov. 2. Former State Auditor Pat Anderson, who had the job from 2002 to 2006, is challenging her in a rematch of the last election, won by Otto.

Otto has helped state fire departments with efforts to update state fire laws, said Nyle Zikmund, Minnesota State Fire Chiefs’ legislative committee chair.

“Unlike others, Auditor Otto has chaired every meeting of the state’s firefighter working group, bringing firefighters who don’t always agree together, and as a result of her leadership, we’ve been able to review and do a major overhaul of state statutes that hadn’t been looked at in 30 years,” Zikmund said.

He said Otto also has conducted regular trainings around the state and is also providing online training to help fire relief associations manage their pension funds.

We would want to go back to the prior auditor why? We seem to have an incumbent who actually handles the job well.
