State Court of Appeals Judge Matthew Johnson will be the new chief judge of the court starting next month, Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced.
Johnson has been on the appeals court since 2008. He takes over the chief job from Edward Toussaint, who will stay on the court until he retires next year.
Johnson earned his B.A. at St. Olaf College and has a law degree from William Mitchell.
There are 19 judges on the Court of Appeals; 11 serve at-large and there is one from each of the eight congressional districts.
