Rural fire chief gets called into action — at his own house

Mike Smith, the fire chief in Round Lake, got called out to a fire Wednesday — at his own house.

A controlled fire got out of hand in the rural area southeast of Worthington, and jumped to a machine shed that contained many of Smith’s possessions, reports the Worthington Daily Globe.

Other buildings were threatened, too. The man who’d started the fire found his phone wouldn’t work, so he drove into town and reported the blaze in person. To Smith.

Several area fire departments responded and saved Smith’s house, but not the shed. He lost tools, a 1990 GMC pickup truck and a motorcycle.
