They didn’t have 2.1 million ballots to deal with, so the recount in a Brainerd city council election went quickly and smoothly, with no mention of frivolous challenges.
In the end, the outcome didn’t change. Incumbent Kelly Bevans got 345 votes; challenger Ed Shaw received 332, said the Brainerd Dispatch.
Shaw will pay about $400 for the recount, which took two hours. Both candidates hovered over the shoulders of the two election judges, who went over the ballots one by one. With other candidates in the race, the total number of ballots cast, counted and recounted was 1,084.
“I’m glad I did it. It was a close race and you never know,” Shaw said.
“I’m glad it’s over,” said Bevans. “I was more nervous about the recount than I was on Election Day.”
