I never pictured Mark Dayton as a Palin-esque shotgun-carrying type, but apparently one of his campaign promises was to host a “Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener” in western Minnesota, and folks there are hopeful that — unlike Dayton’s idea to increase taxes on the tax on the wealthy — the hunting plan will be a promise he can keep.

Dayton made the pledge during the fall in Montevideo, says the West Central Tribune.

Hunters in the area have been holding a VIP pheasant hunt the past few years that’s drawn U.S. Rep.Collin Peterson and area legislators. The hunting groups say many businesses — like restaurants, sporting goods stores, hunting camps, motels and camping grounds — would benefit from the added attention a governor’s opener might bring, as happens with the fishing and deer openers.

The paper says it’s too early to know how much attention a governor’s pheasant opener might attract, or how it will be arranged, and hunting enthusiasts in the area know it’s tough to schedule things with a busy governor, so they’re waiting a bit to follow up on the idea with Dayton’s staff.
