New Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom will have a veteran right-hand man as chief deputy — John Kirkwood, who’s been special agent in charge of the Minneapolis Secret Service office.

Bostrom and Kirkwood worked together planning the law enforcement logistics for the 2008 Republican National Convention. Kirkwood  had been with the Secret Service since 1985, and worked for five years on presidential protection duty. He retired this week from the federal position.

Bob Fletcher, the former sheriff, will return to his job as a watch commander with the St. Paul Police Department. He’d left that job in 1994, when first elected sheriff.
