Ellison, Walz to hold Congress on Corner events Friday

Less than a week after the shooting in Tucson during U.S. Rep.

Less than a week after the shooting in Tucson during U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ constituent event, Minnesota Congressmen Keith Ellison and Tim Walz each have scheduled “Congress on Your Corner” events for Friday.

  • Ellison will meet constituents from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Global Market Atrium, 920 E. Lake St., Minneapolis.
  • Walz’s event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mocol’s Super Market, 1001 N. Broad St., Mankato.

After Saturday’s shooting in Arizona, Ellison made a point of saying he would continue holding public events: “We can never allow violence, threats and intimidation to prevail. Americans will never bow to the gun.”

And the Star Tribune notes that after announcing the Friday event on Twitter, Ellison got a response from someone identified as @RedArgyle saying: “It pains me to have to say this, but please bring security. And thank you for still doing this.”

Ellison responded, “@RedArgyle, plenty of security — uniformed and undercover.”

Announcing his Friday event, Walz said: “Hearing the thoughts and ideas of southern Minnesotans is the cornerstone of our representative democracy. I am looking forward to the opportunity to hear from folks.”
