Ramona Dohman, Maple Grove’s police chief, was named Public Safety commissioner today by Gov. Mark Dayton.

She’ll be the first woman to ever hold that post.

Dohman has nearly 30 years’ experience in law enforcement, joining the Maple Grove force in 1984. She was promoted to chief in 2001. She had been president of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association and last year was appointed chair of the Police Officer Standards and Training Board by Gov. Pawlenty.

The Department of Public Safety is responsible for law enforcement and emergency management, as well as driver licensing and vehicle registration, fire and traffic safety, and alcohol and gambling enforcement.
