Some debate expected when Legislature elects regents today

There won’t be a Wisconsin-style fracas this afternoon, but DFLers in the Legislature are expected to raise a bit of a fuss when a joint session is convened at 4:15 p.m. to elect four University of Minnesota regents.

Two former Republican legislators, Steve Sviggum and Laura Brod, were selected as finalists by a legislative panel, along with current regent David Larson and business executive David McMillan.

But DFLers will have some speeches of outrage because  Brod and Sviggum had initially been nominated for the same seat, but Brod was later shifted to another seat, knocking out current regent Steven Hunter.

Republican legislators in the majority, though, get to issue the final grades on this one.
