Stillwater Lift Bridge tested today; traffic slowed

The Stillwater Lift Bridge — which hasn’t been lifted since the boating season ended last fall — is going up this afternoon as a test, to be sure it’s ready in case it needs to be raised when expected flooding hits the St. Croix River in coming weeks.

Traffic in downtown Stillwater and across the bridge in Wisconsin will be delayed during the tests, scheduled to run from 1:15 p.m. to about 3 p.m.

The bridge has been subject to much scrutiny lately, following reports of rusting and corrosion on the 80-year-old span. Concerns about its age and capacity have spurred all the discussion about the on-again, off-again new bridge proposed for just south of the Stillwater’s downtown.
