Education Secretary Duncan visits St. Paul school

St. Paul’s Dayton’s Bluff Achievement School on the city’s East Side has made some big strides — including meeting its test targets despite a high-poverty student population — and today Education Secretary Arne Duncan is stopping by to see the school in action and offer congratulations.

Keys to the school’s success: after-school programs with an education focus and family resource centers that give parents a place to find help with housing and other issues.

Duncan also is hosting a round-table discussion about the overhaul of federal education law with Sen. Al Franken and local educators.

Duncan is pushing for an overall overhaul of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act before the next school year, but Republican lawmakers prefer to make the changes in pieces.
