The tornado that ripped through Wadena last summer destroyed 200 homes and the community’s high school. On Friday, the community takes another step toward normalcy, with groundbreaking for a new Wadena-Deer Creek High School.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar will speak at the 3 p.m. ceremony for the new school, to be built on the site of the former building. It should be ready for classes in fall 2012.

Students have been attending classes at an elementary school and at Minnesota State Community and Technical Colleges’ Wadena campus.

The EF4 tornado on June 17 caused damage in a 10-mile swath through Wadena.
