MinnPost's Jay Weiner takes job as speech writer for new U of M President Eric Kaler

Jay Weiner, the award-winning journalist who wrote for the Star Tribune for years and has been a longtime MinnPost reporter, has taken a job as speechwriter for Eric Kaler, the new president of the University of Minnesota.

Weiner won acclaim for his coverage of the Al Franken-Norm Coleman Senate race recount. He won a Premack Award for his MinnPost coverage of the recount, and wrote a book, "This is Not Florida; How Al Franken Won the Minnesota Senate Recount," which was published in October 2010 and was nominated for a 2011 Minnesota Book Award.

University officials say Weiner will be "primarily responsible for all presidential speeches, and will assist with overall office communications, including preparing background and briefing materials, managing issues, and drafting content for a variety of publications and audiences."

He'll start Friday, which is also Kaler's first day on the job.

MinnPost founder and publisher Joel Kramer said: “Jay did a great job reporting for MinnPost — stretching himself out in new directions, to the great benefit of our readers. We wish him good luck in his new post.”

Weiner has some history with the University:  he is a former Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School for Public Affairs and has been an adjunct journalism professor at the University of Minnesota.

This is good news for Jay--and for President Kaler, but not so good for the readers of MinnPost. His work here has been timely, sharp and important. That will be missed.

Congratulations but we'll miss you with the Viking stadium hoopla coming to a boil.

Congratulations Jay on your new gig! We are going to miss your comprehensive reporting on all things stadia.

However,in addition to this being bad news for MinnPost readers, Minnesota taxpayers will suffer as the latest Viking's Stadium Billion dollar welfare demand is about to be crammed down our throats by Dayton and Mondale as well as by Zygi Wilf's lackeys on the Ramsey County Commission.

Thanks Jay!

A Small World, figured out that a Mall of America Stadium will help the Football Gophers by playing Rival Games like Wisconsin, Iowa & Nebraska which with the travel traffic and shopping you could sell 100,000 tickets and it would be on National TV which is what top talent wants and man with the most stadium knowledge in MN is Jay, will be sending him a letter with much information which I've done many times before, it just proves that age old saying... you can run but you can't hide... and that's the vikingbuzz...
