Jay Weiner, the award-winning journalist who wrote for the Star Tribune for years and has been a longtime MinnPost reporter, has taken a job as speechwriter for Eric Kaler, the new president of the University of Minnesota.
Weiner won acclaim for his coverage of the Al Franken-Norm Coleman Senate race recount. He won a Premack Award for his MinnPost coverage of the recount, and wrote a book, “This is Not Florida; How Al Franken Won the Minnesota Senate Recount,” which was published in October 2010 and was nominated for a 2011 Minnesota Book Award.
University officials say Weiner will be “primarily responsible for all presidential speeches, and will assist with overall office communications, including preparing background and briefing materials, managing issues, and drafting content for a variety of publications and audiences.”
He’ll start Friday, which is also Kaler’s first day on the job.
MinnPost founder and publisher Joel Kramer said: “Jay did a great job reporting for MinnPost — stretching himself out in new directions, to the great benefit of our readers. We wish him good luck in his new post.”
Weiner has some history with the University: he is a former Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School for Public Affairs and has been an adjunct journalism professor at the University of Minnesota.
