Bemidji to rename its ‘Stoner Avenue’ after repeated sign thefts

The “Stoner Avenue” street signs in Bemidji are stolen so often that city officials have decided to change the street’s name.

The City Council has begun the lengthy changeover process, which will mean address changes for more than 40 property owners, said the Bemidji Pioneer.

Officials are thinking about Franklin Avenue as the new name; at least it won’t be Mary Jane Street.

The city engineer said they spend nearly $2,000 a year replacing the stolen Stoner Avenue signs, which likely end up proudly displayed in dorm rooms, bedrooms and basement rec rooms.
