Child care grants ruled essential in shutdown

As fine-tuning continues of what is and isn’t a critical state service during the shutdown, the court ruled today that child care grants for poor families is essential and should be resumed.

Judge Kathleen Gearin reversed an earlier decision and today approved the recommendation (PDF) of special master Kathleen Blatz.

State officials had testified that federal money was intertwined with state money in the child care program and would be too difficult, if not impossible, to sort out.
