Automatic adjustments add penny to cigarette tax

Starting today, the state tax on cigarettes goes up a penny.

But smokers can’t light into this year’s Legislature for the increase. It’s an annual adjustment, reflecting inflation and current retail prices, says an AP story.

So the sales tax is now 36 cents, up from 35 cents But that’s just the beginning of the cigarette taxes: there’s also a 48-cent excise tax and a 75-cent health impact fee, for a total of $1.59 a pack.
