Be careful where you get those walnut boards

Walnut wood from 11 states where thousand cankers disease has been found is now banned from Minnesota, says Don Davis of the Fargo Forum:

Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson announced the quarantine to prevent the disease from entering Minnesota. It is caused by a fungus carried by the walnut twig beetle.

The disease has been found in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Utah.

    If you follow through the references within this item, you will find that they talk about raw wood source as the media of transmittal of the disease and NOT walnut lumber.

    However, one should always make sure that any stick of walnut lumber you wish to work, should be clear of suggested areas of strange appearing surface anyway, if only to assure that you receive full value for the purchase price, as you can be sure that the going price of every stick of this glamorous material will now cost somewhat more than the last one you bought.
