Longtime Olmsted County Commissioner Mike Podulke died unexpectedly last winter, and this week his wife, Stephanie Podulke, won a special election to fill his seat.
She was the only candidate on the ballot, says the Rochester Post-Bulletin. There were three write-in votes for others.
Mike Podulke was chairman of the county board when he died; he’d been on the board for 24 years, representing much of Rochester.
Stephanie Podulke, 66, will serve the remainder of her late husband’s term, through 2012. She has said she’ll then seek re-election, the paper said.
She told the paper: “I was thinking today why I chose to do this. Things are serious … The county needs somebody who was at least as prepared as I was to do this.”
