State Rep. Jeff Hayden of Minneapolis has added two endorsements from gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups in his bid to get the DFL nomination in a special election for the state Senate seat vacated by Linda Berglin.

OutFront Minnesota’s Political Action Committee and the Stonewall DFL Caucus are backing Hayden in the Senate District 61 seat.

“As a State Senator, Jeff Hayden will continue to fight for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of his district and the entire state,” Scott Benson of the OutFront PAC said in a statement. “Hayden’s long history of supporting the LGBT communities really came through with his powerful opposition to the anti-marriage amendment on the House floor this last session.”

Berglin, who has taken a job with Hennepin County, has also endorsed Hayden.

He’ll face five other DFLers — Sadik Warfa, Kristian Heuer, Elsa Batica, Paulette Will and Kyle Wilson — in a Sept. 13 primary.

The winner will go to the Oct. 18 special election against:

  • Bruce A. Lundeen, a Republican
  • Farheen Hakeem, Green Party
  • Matt Brillhart, Independence Party.
