Gov. Mark Dayton and lawmakers are meeting today to discuss ways to keep Asian carp out of Minnesota waters.
The 1 p.m. session at the Capitol will include DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr and state and federal lawmakers or their representatives, who will develop an action plan to stop the invasive species.
They’ll get to to carp about carp.
The DNR announced last week that it will continue DNA testing for evidence of the carp at 225 locations in the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers and 50 locations in the Minnesota River.
Earlier DNA testing in the St. Croix showed evidence of the carp, but none were found in a recent sweep of the river.
“This is good news because it suggests Asian carp may be in low numbers in the St. Croix River, and perhaps only a few individuals,” said Landwehr said in a statement. “It also suggests we have some time to research and implement barriers that can help slow their spread.”
