The College Republicans at St. Paul’s Macalester College — that bastion of liberalism — say they will celebrate Constitution Day by building a free speech wall on campus Friday.

Never mind that Constitution Day was Sept. 17.

On Friday, students are encouraged to write on the wall “whatever message they desire, political or otherwise, on the structure to exercise their right to free speech.”

In announcing the wall, the group said: “The political environment at Macalester College is particularly toxic for conservative, moderate, and independent students.” So they’re pushing hard to teach other students, and faculty, to respect all viewpoints, including the club members’ relatively conservative positions.

Mac sophomore Jeffrey Garcia wrote a commentary earlier this month for a higher education site about what he considered academic bias at the school: “When first going into my classes, I was surprised at the bullying I received for my center-right views.”
