Gov. Mark Dayton will be in Montevideo Saturday traipsing through fields looking for pheasants.
He’ll lead the first Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener, fashioned after the official deer hunting and fishing openers, and fulfilling a promise he made on the campaign trail last year.
A whole contingent of politicians will be part of Montevideo hunt: U.S. Reps. John Kline and Collin Peterson, Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Zellers, Montevideo Mayor Debra Fader, Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Landwehr, Public Safety Commissioner Mona Dohman, Director of Explore Minnesota Tourism John Edman, and others.
(I hope none of them have Cheney-like hunting tendencies.)
They’ll be based at the Watson Hunting Camp and, starting a 9 a.m., will hunt in one of the Wildlife Management Areas in Lac qui Parle County.
The governor is scheduled to report in at noon on his hunting success.
Saturday night he’ll be at a community celebration in Montevideo, which is open to the public.
I can’t say how much I love the fact that Mark Dayton embraces hunting and the importance of the hunting culture AND conservationism/environmnetalism. The right wing have long been able to stir up suspicion of the progressive side because of small pockets of anti-hunting sentiment amongst liberals. Meanwhile, they privatize our places to hunt and advance policies that destroy fish and wildlife habitat. Mark Dayton is a true friend of hunters.
