Veterans Memorial going up on St. Paul’s Harriet Island

A groundbreaking will be held Thursday for a new American Veterans Memorial at St. Paul’s Harriet Island Park.

It will be near the park’s Great Lawn along the river walk. There will be a large gathering area surrounded by several flagpoles. It will be call “American Veterans Memorial — Plaza de Honor.”

The American Veterans–Mexican American Post #5 has been working to get a veterans memorial on the city’s West Side for years. Members of the group, along with Mayor Chris Coleman and Council Member Dave Thune will be at the 11 a.m. groundbreaking. Construction will start later this month.

Officials said the project is being funded through a series of grants and one-time funding allocated through a partnership with the City of Saint Paul, the American Veterans–Mexican American Post #5 and U.S. Bank.

This is outrageous. As a Native American veteran, I demand a special memorial be built just to honor Native American veterans.
