One of the early bills up for debate in the Minnesota House will be a proposal to allow prosecutors to carry guns while on duty.
The bill, introduced by state Rep. Tony Cornish, a Republican from Good Thunder, will be discussed in a Thursday floor session, says Minnesota Lawyer.
Cornish also has a bill in the hopper that would increase penalties for assaulting or causing the death of a prosecuting attorney.
Cook County Prosecutor Timothy Scannell and a witness were shot in December at the courthouse by a man who’d been convicted of a sex crime. The suspect later died in custody after contracting a strep infection.
The story says Cornish had been working on the prosecutor-carry bill before the shooting.
There are already laws putting mandating penalties for shooting police officers and corrections officers; the Cornish bill would add prosecutors to the list.
